F-Fly
Developed by Slovenian tier Marjan Fratnik in the 1980s, the F-Fly has become one of the most globally important CDC dry flies. Its minimal construction — just a thread body and one to three CDC feathers tied flat on top — creates a fly that rides perfectly in and on the film. The CDC fibers trap air bubbles and create a lifelike glint of wing. Deadly for selective trout during any surface hatch, and essential for low, clear water with educated fish.

Materials
- hook: Dry fly hook #10–22
- thread: 10/0, color to match natural
- body: Tying thread or fine colored silk
- wing: 1–3 CDC feathers, tied on top and trimmed to hook bend
Tying steps
- Mount a size 10–22 hook; start 10/0 thread in the appropriate color at the bend.
- Wind a smooth, slim body of colored thread from bend to the 3/4 mark.
- Select 1–3 CDC feathers, size depending on hook; measure so the tips reach the hook bend.
- Tie in the CDC feathers flat on top of the hook at the 3/4 mark.
- Build a small thread head over the CDC stems.
- Trim CDC tips flush with the hook bend if needed.
- Whip finish; do not apply any floatant to CDC feathers.
- Inspect the CDC wing from above — it should be a flat, single-layer figure that covers no more than one hook gap in width for proper footprint on the water surface.
