Czech Nymph (Czech Mate)
The Czech Nymph, popularized by Czech national fly fishing teams at world championships, is the original tight-line Euro-nymphing pattern. Its weighted body sinks instantly and is fished with a direct contact to the fly — no strike indicator, no slack. The shrimp-like curved profile and olive or amber dubbing imitates a wide range of aquatic larvae and nymphs. This pattern and technique transformed competitive trout fishing worldwide.

Materials
- hook: Heavy curved scud/Czech hook #8–14
- thread: Olive or tan 6/0
- weight: Heavy lead wire
- body: Olive, amber, or cream dubbing, shaped convex
- ribbing: Fine gold or copper wire
- shellback: Clear mono or Thin Skin pulled over back
Tying steps
- Mount a size 8–14 heavy curved scud or Czech nymph hook; wind heavy lead wire on the shank.
- Start olive thread over the lead; shape the body into a convex back profile with thread.
- Tie in monofilament back and fine gold or copper wire ribbing at the bend.
- Dub a fat, tapered abdomen of olive, amber, or cream dubbing to the 2/3 mark.
- Fold the mono back over the abdomen; wind gold wire rib in 6 tight spirals and secure.
- Dub a slightly darker olive or brown thorax with picked-out fibers at the 2/3 mark.
- Tie in a small strip of dark brown or black Thin Skin as a back over the thorax.
- Build a small head, whip finish, and cement; the fly should appear shrimp-like when wet.
