Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Fly Reporter — how to drop pins, read the map, use hatch charts, check river flow data, submit fly shops, and more.

What is Fly Reporter?

Fly Reporter is a community-driven map where fly anglers share real-time fishing reports. You can drop a pin anywhere on the map to record what's working — the fly patterns, fish species, water conditions, and any field notes — so other anglers can see what's happening on the water right now.

Why do pins disappear after 10 days?

Fishing conditions change constantly. A great report from two weeks ago may be completely irrelevant today. Pins automatically expire after 10 days so the map always shows current, actionable information rather than stale data.

Why is my pin placed slightly away from where I tapped?

This is intentional. Fly Reporter deliberately offsets every pin by a random distance of up to 0.5 miles from the point you tapped. Your exact GPS coordinates are never stored or shared. This protects sensitive fisheries from overcrowding while still giving other anglers a useful general area to explore.

How do I drop a pin?

Log in, then tap or click anywhere on the map. A form will appear where you can fill in a location name, fish species, fly type (Dry Fly, Wet Fly, Nymph, or Streamer), effective fly patterns, water conditions, and field notes.

Are there daily limits on posting or reporting?

Yes — 2 fishing-spot pins per day and up to 5 pin reports per day per account per 24-hour rolling window. Fly shop submissions are separate and not subject to these limits. Limits reset every 24 hours from your first action, not at midnight.

What are the Top 2 Flies and Top 2 Species buttons?

These buttons calculate the most-mentioned fly patterns and fish species from all active pins within your current map view. Move and zoom the map to a river or region you're interested in, then tap either button to see what's working there right now. You must be logged in to use these features.

How do I filter the map by fly type, continent, or US state?

Tap the Filter button below the map. You can filter pins by fly type (Dry Fly, Wet Fly, Nymph, Streamer), jump to a specific continent, or zoom directly to any US state. Filters can be combined, active filters are shown with a count badge, and the Clear all control resets everything.

What is a fly shop submission?

You can submit a fly shop location to the map. Tap anywhere on the map, choose 'Fly Shop' as the pin type, and fill in the shop name and any helpful notes like the address or website. Fly shop submissions are reviewed by an administrator before appearing publicly.

How does upvoting work?

Every fishing spot pin has a thumbs-up button in its popup. If you find a report useful or it matches your experience, you can upvote it and remove your upvote later. Upvotes require a login.

How do I view another angler's profile?

Open a fishing spot pin posted by another angler and select their name at the top of the popup. Their public profile shows their username, hometown, social links, and active pins on a mini-map.

How do I set up my profile?

After logging in for the first time, follow the setup flow to choose a username. You can later update your profile, photo, hometown, and social links from the Account page.

Can I delete a pin I've dropped?

Yes. Open your pin's popup and select Remove. Pins also leave the public map automatically after 10 days, while expired pins remain visible in your profile history.

What should I do if I see an inaccurate or inappropriate pin?

Open the pin popup, select Report, choose the reason, and submit it for administrator review. Reporting is intended for inaccurate locations, spam, or content that violates the Terms of Service, with a limit of 5 reports per day.

Do I need an account to browse the map?

No. Anyone can view the map and see where pins are placed without logging in. However, you can only open and read the details of 2 pins per session before being prompted to sign in. Dropping pins, upvoting, reporting, and viewing Top Flies/Species all require a free account.

How do I log in?

Fly Reporter uses Replit for authentication. Tap the menu icon in the top-right corner — if you're not logged in you'll see a Log In option. You can create a free Replit account during the login flow if you don't have one already.
